LEONARDO DA VINCI
( Reconstruction )

After sketching and painting him so many times, I thought it would be nice to take it one step further and try to reconstruct his face in sculpture, again using the various existing (self) portraits as reference.
Easier said than done. The whole process took two attempts (the first bust was unbalanced and unceremoniously face-planted the worktop) and 6 weeks from start to finish.

NOTE: I used one of Leonardo’s techniques on the drapery, and it worked a treat besides being probably the messiest thing I have ever done. It’s actual fabric soaked in very liquid casting plaster…

Sculpey & SculptDry clays, plaster, granite reinforced base, wire armature.
Acrylic & Oil paints, Satin Gloss varnish.
