FLITTING THOUGHTS
Ma il sasso gittato per obliquo dalla superficie al fondo dell’acqua morta fa… I’ lascero qui stare le prove, le quali si faran poi nell’opera ordinata, e attenderò solamente a trovare casi e invenzioni, e le metterò successivamente secondo che le vengano, e poi darò ordine, mettendo insieme quelle d’un medecimo genere; sì che per ora non ti maraviglierai, né riderai di me, lettore, se qui si fa sì gran salti da materia a materia. Ora, per tornare…
But the stone thrown at an angle from the bottom to the surface of the still water does… I will not consider the demonstrations here because I will reserve them for the ordered work. My concern now is to find subjects and inventions, gathering them as they occur to me; later I will put them in order, putting together those of the same kind. So you need not wonder, nor laugh at me, reader, if there are jumps from subject to subject. Now, to return…
[ NOTE: Leonardo did this a fair few times in his notebooks, writing down more or less random thoughts in the middle of a sentence just as they popped into his mind. Many of his notes are preliminary at this stage, leaving out vital conclusions to save them for the final versions of the books he never had the chance to put together… ]
